For a chilled out mellow beer that really comes into it’s element over time, West City Brewing have nailed this XPA.
The Good: The can does not lie when it says “plenty of tropical and floral hop aromas” and literally within seconds of cracking the can I was delighted by the gorgeous smells that emanated from the can. The initial taste of this was almost overwhelming dominated by the flavours of the hops, a powerful almost grapefruit-esque after taste lingers just a little bit longer than expected, which I must say is a welcome taste on a great spring day.
The Bad: Its carbonated a little too much for my liking, like you crack this beer you immediately get head frothing from the can. The first 2 or 3 sips were also largely fizzy, which actually had me park the beer while I got back to some computer work that I have been delaying for Suburban Brewing, in doing so this beer actually mellowed out somewhat but for those that are keen to crack this and down it isn’t going to be a favourite.
Enjoyment: I’ll be the first to admit that when I had those initial sips I was not 100% on this beer. I mean I enjoy a good XPA as much as the next man but the carbonation almost killed it for me. That being said after literally 5 - 10 minutes with it airing out the remainder became something that was quite… pleasant and amazingly flavoursome. This is the sort of beer that you drink during a session, you take your time, savour the flavours and really bask in the flavours in order to get the most out of this beer. If you are a fast paced drinker (I’ll admit that is me) then this beer will be a struggle for you, so slow it down and get to know this beer, you won’t regret it if you do.
