A surprise packet with a fruit hit that will keep you coming back for more, this Raspberry Berliner Weisse really impressed!
The Good: Admittedly I was a little unsure what to expect with this one. I'd tried plenty of sours before, and I'd tried raspberry wheat beers before too, but this was something else. Upon pouring, that sour scent I associate with Berliner Weisse was present but not overbearing, and the fruitiness was much more forward than I'd anticipated, and quite pleasant. I tried a sip, and then a gulp, this beer WAS something else! Very refreshing, and an amazingly light mouthfeel without being watery.
The Bad: I'm by no means an expert on sours, but this is definitely in the top two or three for me. Hard to fault if you go in with an open mind. If you've never tried anything like this before, maybe it'll be a little forward flavour wise (but that's going to be the case with almost all sours, and this is a lot more approachable than some). I like it, and am struggling to come up with anything bad to list. I guess I was expecting more of a pink hue than I got. But honestly...Drawing a long bow at this point in the interest of a balanced review.
Enjoyment: I tried this beer on a freezing cold night and thought it tasted great. I can't help but think maybe it'd be even better on a warm day, outside in the sunshine (served icy cold of course). Again, sours really aren't my scene, but this is a really enjoyable brew. That hint of raspberry is great, and you've got to love anything with a bit of wheat in there right? I'll definitely be buying a slab of these to see me through those warm spring weekends if that's any indication of my enjoyment level.
