Holgate Brewhouse has come to the table with a wonderful Australian XPA that simply delights, this could be the beer for Spring!
The Good: You know when you crack a beer and the aroma of fresh citrus hits your nostrils like a wonderful breath of fresh air (and no I am not referring to that fake citrus smell either, more like that drive through Mildura and smelling the oranges as you drive through), that was exactly this beer. This Australian XPA has a very citrusy scent that belong wholeheartedly to the hops that are being used, those being Ella, Galaxy and Topaz, needless to say you are greeted with a refreshingly hoppy beer that YOU know you are going to enjoy right from the get go. It is sweet and bitter but oh so delightful with every sip that you take.
The Bad: With a beer this delightfully hoppy a little bit more carbonation would have really set this beer off nicely. It is a very smooth drink and very light on the carbonation as a result, I guess this is why they refer to it as a “Session Beer for Hop Heads”!
Enjoyment: Honestly I could see myself drinking this on the regular, cracking open a beer on a Saturday afternoon, warm sunshine washing across me and my backyard, enjoying it with my wife and son for a relaxing evening in. It doesn’t scream “party beer”, something that you would throw down your gullet just because, no, this is a beer that is to be savoured and enjoyed before a nice meal and in good company. Drink it slowly and enjoy the flavours, I mean how often are you going to come across a great combination of hops from a wonderful brewery such as Holgate?
