A blast from the past comes back in a Berliner-Weisse for you to enjoy nostalgically today.
The Good: Straight out of the gate you are immediately greeted with the colour you typically associate with Ribena, that is a purple blackcurrant drink which for many years had a place in my refrigerator as a kid. Even having a good old sniff straight from the glass you can smell exactly what Ribena used to smell like. All of the signs are pointing to it being a great tasting indulgence down memory lane… The verdict… Yep it tastes like carbonated Ribena, not even going to kid you on this one it is almost like a watered down version of what Ribena tastes like (I’m guessing the fact it has been infused with a Berliner-Weisse, which to the uninitiated is simply a German Sour White Beer, is the reason for this). So not going to lie, drinking this beer is exactly like drinking a Ribena as a kid, which to me is wonderful!
The Bad: I used to be not such a great fan of the sour beers, I always thought that they were a travesty to brewing beer. Some of you may agree with this sentiment and others may disagree strongly. However if you are not a fan of sours then this beer is not going to be to your liking, it is not a sharp sour taste (not like say Guava Smash by Stomping Ground Brewing Co. for instance) but it is definitely noticeable. As well if you were not a fan of Ribena back in the day then you are most definitely not going to enjoy this one.
Enjoyment: The fact that this was brewed for The Great Australian Beer Spectapular is awesome because it shows the creativity that breweries like Cheeky Monkey Brewery puts into combining very different (and sometimes opposing) flavours. For me personally I quite liked this beer, it was sharp and very fruity and lingered around long enough for me to appreciate the beer long after it had gone down the hatch. Not only did I enjoy that but it walked me down memory lane, it reminded me of sitting in front of the television after school watching cartoons until dinner time, so on that note I am off to watch Rocko’s Modern Life…
